The comet made its closest approach to the Earth on July 22, 2000, at a distance of 0.3724 AU (55,710,000 km; 34,620,000 mi). This is another comet found by the automatic minor planet search program LINEAR in New Mexico.

At least 16 fragments were detected in images of comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) taken on 5 August 2000 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and on 6 August with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The evolution of the morphology of C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) is examined from a series of images taken from shortly before the disruption of the nucleus until 10 days afterwards. This is combined with light curve data to provide a unique documentation of the early evolution of the disruption event. A morphological and photometric study of C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) is presented based on data taken with the 1 m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope (JKT) and 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos and the 82 cm IAC-80 Telescope at Teide Observatory, and visual and CCD data from Spanish amateur astronomers. Here, we present conclusive evidence for detection of x-ray line emission produced by CXE in the first comet observed using the new Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO).
